Doberman lovers are creative in finding unique and beautiful names that suit the individual characteristics of their loved ones.  Some chosen names have been classical and enduring, while others have been trendy and lose their appeal quickly.  Because it’s not a good idea to change your dog’s name, choose a name carefully.  Find a name that is easy and quick to say, that will catch your dog’s attention, and that will elicit respect from others.

Some of the overused names have been popular because they were short and crisp.  Fido is a classical Greek moniker meaning, “I am faithful”.  The name Fifi has percussive sharp sounds that capture a dog’s attention easily.  Although the other dogs won’t laugh if you use these names, people might and the effect could be just as aversive for your pup! Try to avoid names like "Satan" when at all possible.

If you have a special area of interest, you may find a word that has a special meaning and an appropriate sound that will make a good Doberman name. Similarly, names from Roman, Greek, Norse, or other mythology can make striking names for a bold and beautiful Dobe.  The names Apollo and Thor have probably been overused, but another, more obscure name or term won’t be hard to find.  German names have also been popular for both Dobermans and Rottweilers.

When you consider a name, roll it around in your mind and let it sink in, say it a few times, imagine derivatives and diminutives, and write down the ones that might work for you.
